Durian and Alcohol Fatal Myth, Busted!

To discover more about this myth, firstly, let us take a look on how the human body breaks down the alcohol consumed.

  • Drinkable alcohol, known as ethanol (formula: CH3CH2OH) is commonly metabolised in the liver.
  • At the first stage, ethanol will be transformed into acetaldehyde with the help of enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH)
  • Acetaldehyde is a carcinogenic toxin to our body but luckily, they won’t linger too long in our blood thanks to another enzyme called aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH).
  • Aldehyde dehydrogenase will swiftly transform all toxic acetaldehyde into a safer compound called acetate.Acetate is then broken down finally into carbon dioxide and water, which are 100% safe for our body. Phew!

So why is durian and alcohol called the killer duo?

  • Durian, our prized the king of fruit is known to be packed with a type of sulfur compound called diethyl disulfide.
  • Diethyl disulfide is found out to be a great nuisance to the activity of aldehyde dehydrogenase, by inhibiting them from transforming toxic acetaldehyde into non-toxic acetate.
  • Due to that, toxic acetaldehyde continues to stay for a long time in the body causing more adverse effects such as damaged liver and kidneys.
  • There are also some reports in the past such as by Singh, P. 1941, where he mentioned that consumption of alcohol and durian leading to death is linked to acute haemorrhagic pancreatitis.
  • There are other reports such as by Fuller, 2007 and Croft, 1981 which highlighted the unpleasant symptoms such as palpitation, facial flushing, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting, when durian is consumed with alcohol. According to the report, such symptoms can also result in cardiac arrest or even fatality.

Well, thankfully in December 1969, a group of scientists from University of Singapore conducted a preliminary research on the interaction of alcohol and durian. Based on their result, there are a few insights to this myth:

  • Results showed that alcohol and durian is NOT DANGEROUS
  • Durian and alcohol combination may only cause mild symptoms
    such as unsteady gait, reduction in metabolism of alcohol and bloating.
  • Durian and alcohol is not fatal!

Then in November 2009, another group of scientists from the University of Tsukuba, Japan, conducted a research to study the inhibitory effect of sulfur compounds in durian towards the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase
They found that:

  • Diethyl disulfide compounds in durian causes some inhibitory effect on the activity of enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase
  • However, there is no possibility of durian interfering the entire detoxification process of alcohol by enzymes.
  • Durian and alcohol association shows similar effect as the Disulfiram-
    Ethanol Reaction therapies to curb alcoholism which causes flushing,
    sweating, tremors, nausea, vomiting, elevated heartbeat, low blood
    pressure and restlessness
  • No results suggesting death when alcohol is consumed with durian.
